Judy and I have had the privilege of keeping our Grandchildren for a week recently - at least two of them all of that time and all four of them some of that time.
Learned lots. Sorta overreacted to one of the songs I heard them singing several times.
"I'm having a bad, bad day,
It's about time that I get my way,
Steam rollin’ in whatever I see,
O, despicable me.". (quasi rap)
Fortunately, before I organized a million man march on Washington DC to protest my Grandchildren being permanently, emotionally damaged by such a negatively impacting song, our daughter straightened me out on the positive message of the movie itself.
But not before I had composed a Christian counter to this corrosive chorus.
"I'm having a glad, glad day
Even when things aren't going my way
Jesus is rollin’ with me,
O, redeemable, esteemable me!
What got to me so - to think of my Grandchildren thinking of themselves as "despicable" was just more that I could take, especially to hear them singing it about themselves.
Obviously, I misunderstood the meaning of the song/movie.
Not wrong about this though:
Just as sure as it grieved me to think my Grandchildren were speaking about themselves in such a negative way, how much more it grieves our Heavenly Father if/when we speak about ourselves in that way.
You are not now, nor will ever be, despicable.
Valuable, redeemable, esteemable - YES!
